A look inside the house with granny flat of Yasmien, Krista, and Ludo.

How multigenerational living brings warmth and generations together.

On the edge of the Flemish Ardennes stands a unique home with granny flat where daughter Yasmien and her parents Ludo and Krista each have their own space. The house is a new build on the site where Krista herself grew up. With its rustic charm and a floor designed for life, the home radiates cosiness and authenticity.

A fresh start on familiar ground

Krista: “I grew up here. This was my childhood home, but sadly, it couldn’t be saved. So we decided to tear it down and build a new house. My husband Ludo designed the house himself. He runs a construction company and immediately had lots of ideas about the room structure, materials, and finishes. Together with our children, we did much of the work ourselves. Every weekend, we were at the construction site! We even installed the wood flooring ourselves.”

Back to the roots

Yasmien: “It was a very conscious choice to live next to my parents. I’m single, but I love the feeling of having people around me. Before this, I lived in an apartment in Ghent, but this offers so much more: peace, space, and a strong connection with family. Plus, it’s comforting to know this house will be practical if mom and dad ever need more care.”

Privacy as a priority

Although Yasmien and her parents live together, the house is divided into two separate units. Yasmien lives in the front section and upstairs, while Krista and Ludo reside in the back part with a stunning view of the surrounding fields. Each has their own entrance.

Krista: “We have an unspoken rule to always respect each other’s privacy. Everyone does their own shopping and household. If Yasmien runs out of eggs, she’ll knock, but otherwise, we don’t interfere in each other’s households. That balance works perfectly for us.”

Yasmien: “The great thing is that we can call on each other for help if needed. When I’m on vacation, mom feeds the cat. And it’s nice to see my nieces and nephews more often since they often stay with grandma and grandpa.”

Interior choices with character

Krista and Ludo’s home showcases a rustic, country style. For their living area, they chose the Carcassonne floor from Lamett, which complements their love for natural materials with a lived-in feel.

Krista: “I love furniture and materials with a story. The Carcassonne fits perfectly: 200-year-old oak with visible saw marks and cracks. It’s a floor that radiates warmth and invites living. A scratch or stain doesn’t stand out at all.”

My interior is a space where I can truly relax. I work a lot and have a busy social life, so at home, I want to unwind.

For their bedroom and guest room, Krista and Ludo opted for Ferme, which also has a rustic look with numerous knots and striking filled cracks.

Yasmien, on the other hand, went for a more Scandinavian design with light furniture and soft green tones. In her bedrooms and home office, she chose a wood floor of the Bergamo collection*, a floor that perfectly aligns with her simple and clean aesthetic.

Yasmien: “My interior is a space where I can truly relax. I work a lot and have a busy social life, so at home, I want to unwind. The Bergamo engineered floor definitely contributes to that with its soft appearance and natural beauty.”

The power of engineered flooring

Krista: “Thirty years ago, we chose tiles because they seemed more practical with three young children. But I always said, if we ever build again, we’ll go for a wood flooring. It’s so much cosier. A house should feel lived in, and an engineered floor can handle that. It’s a warm, inviting foundation for the close-knit family we are.”
