Which parts of the tree are used for parquet?

Applicable for

  • Parquet

To get a better idea of the different wood selections, it is useful to know how a trunk is composed and which part of the trunk is now used to produce the wooden planks.

  • Bark: protection against external influences

  • Bast: transports nutrients from the air (photosynthesis causes carbon dioxide and water to be converted into sugars and oxygen under the influence of light) to the roots.

  • Cambium: important for cell growth in the wood (cellulose). The cambium layer has an influence on the bast and the sapwood and causes growth rings.

  • Sapwood: this is the living part of the tree that consists of growth rings. The sapwood layer is very rich in water and transports nutrients from the roots to the crown.

  • Heartwood: this is sapwood that dies on the inside and lignifies. The heart is usually darker then sapwood. With wooden floors, one uses heartwood and with rustic floors also sapwood.

Heartwood is used to produce parquet. In the more rustic collections, the sapwood is also used.
